British Columbia Wine Production is Growing and Growing...
and You Won't Believe Where
British Columbia is fast becoming one of the major players in the world of wine. With over 90 wineries in British Columbia, you can now find one to visit practically in your own back yard. With locations ranging from Vancouver Island to Langley to the Okanagan, these wineries are making a wide variety of styles and tastes, and even some with a different twist such as the "non grape" fruit based winery located in Richmond, British Columbia.
This expansion into other areas has come about for many reasons. One of those reasons is that quality land for grape growing now comes at more of a premium, and there is little left to acquire in the typical growing areas of the Okanagan. This has challenged wine growers and producers to set up shop elsewhere. Another reason is that different climates and conditions produce different qualities in the fruit, creating stylistically different wines from each area.
Now, to add a new, and unbelievable, depth to wine production in British Columbia, grape growing is now spreading (no pun intended) to new areas, and you won't believe where! Areas such as Grand Forks, Lillooet, Ashcroft, and Pemberton are now planting and growing grapes for the winemaking industry. They are working hard to create ideal growing conditions for their climates, and experimenting with varietals that are most likely to tolerate the different extremes in their weather.
Now this will certainly add a new flavour to what we call BC wine. I can't wait to try some of these new wine growing rookies product once it's available.
